Easter Dirt Cake Recipe

What is dirt cake?

Dirt “cake” is a fun dessert for kids (and adults, too) that usually includes oreo cookie crumbs, and pudding. You can do any flavors of pudding you like, and traditional dirt cake includes things like gummy worms, that make it seem more like dirt. You can make it in a large baking dish, or individual cups, like we did for our Easter Dirt Cups. Our Easter Oreo dirt cake is topped with pastel Easter colored M&M’s and a variety of Peeps marshmallows!

Easter Dirt Cake Recipe

Easter Dirt Cake Ingredients:

  • 36 Oreo Cookies
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 3/4 cups milk
  • 2 (3 oz.) packages of chocolate instant pudding mix
  • 12 ounces cool whip
  • Pastel Easter M&Ms (peanut, or regular)
  • Peeps marshmallows

How To Make Easter Dirt Cake:

Step 1: Add half of the oreo cookies to your food processor (about 18 cookies), and pulse to fine crumbs.

Step 2: Press the oreo crumbs into the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.

Step 3: In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to mix cream cheese and butter, until smooth.

Step 4: Add powdered sugar, and mix again to combine.

Step 5: In a separate bowl, whisk together milk and chocolate pudding mixes, until smooth and pudding begins to thicken.

Step 6: Slowly add the chocolate pudding to the cream cheese mixture, mixing well.

Step 7: Add cool whip to the pudding and cream cheese mixture, and mix well to combine, until there are no streaks of cool whip remaining.

Step 8: Drop the mixture in large spoonfuls into the 9×13 inch pan.

Step 9: Gently smooth out the pudding mixture evenly across the pan.

Step 10: Add the remaining oreo cookies to your food processor, and pulse to fine crumbs.

Step 11: Sprinkle oreo crumbs evenly over top of the pudding layer.

Step 12: Move to the refrigerator to chill for about 2 hours, or until ready to serve.

Step 13: Before serving, sprinkle M&Ms over top of the oreo crumbs, and place peeps marshmallows into the crumbs.

Notes & Substitutions:

  • If you don’t have a food processor, you can add your Oreo cookies to a large ziploc bag and beat them with a rolling pin or something similar, to crumbs.
  • You can use any flavor pudding you prefer. We love chocolate for the “mud” look in our dirt cake, but vanilla, cheesecake, and butterscotch are all delicious flavors you can do!
  • You can get creative with the toppings on top of the dirt cake. Try adding Easter edible grass, or green sprinkles. You could also swap the M&Ms for Cadbury mini eggs. Any Easter candy that you love is perfect!
