Halloween Trifle Recipe

This Halloween Trifle Recipe is such a fun and easy Halloween dessert. It is perfect for any Halloween party or celebration. Halloween is one of our favorite holidays, we love making spooky fun treats, and this one is always a crowd pleaser.

  • We are obsessed with how easy trifles are to put together. They look complicated but it couldn’t be easier to make this Halloween treat. Trifles always make for a fun and fancy-looking presentation, without all the extra work.

​Halloween Trifle Ingredients:

  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix, plus the ingredients from the back (water, oil, eggs)
  • 2 (3.4 oz.) boxes of cheesecake instant pudding
  • 3 cups of cold milk
  • 8 ounces cool whip (or other whipped topping)
  • 30 Oreo cookies
  • Ghost peeps
  • Mallowcreme Pumpkins
  • ​Ghoul’s Mix M&M’s
  • Milano cookies
  • Black gel cookie icing
  • Orange gel food coloring

Directions:

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and spray two round cake pans with non-stick spray. Set aside.

Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, prepare the cake batter, and bake in the round pans, according to the box directions. Once finished, let the cake cool completely.

Step 3: Add the Oreo cookies to a food processor and blitz into a fine crumb. Set aside. Alternatively, you can add them to a large gallon sized storage bag and crush with a rolling pin.

Step 4: In a large bowl, whisk together pudding mixes and milk, until smooth. Add cool whip and mix until well combined. Add a generous amount of orange gel food coloring, and whisk until the color is fully incorporated.

Step 5: Remove the cakes from their pans and break into large chunks.

Step 6: Assemble your trifle. Place half of the cake pieces into the bottom of the trifle bowl in an even layer.

Step 7: Add 1/3 of the crushed Oreos on top of the layer of chocolate cake.

Step 8: Add 1/2 of the pudding mixture on top of the Oreo crumbs.

Step 9: Repeat the layers with the remaining half of the cake, another 1/3 of the Oreo crumbs, and the remaining pudding mixture. Add a final layer of the remaining Oreo crumbs for the graveyard dirt.

Step 10: Refrigerate the trifle until ready to serve. Before serving, lay out the Milano cookies- we used 3 on top of our trifle. Use the black gel cookie icing to write “RIP” on top of the cookies to make headstones.

Step 11: Decorate the top of the this Halloween Trifle recipe with Milano cookie headstones, ghost peeps, candy pumpkins, and M&M’s.

Substitutions & Tips:

Pudding– if you prefer, you can swap the orange colored cheesecake pudding for vanilla pudding, or skip the orange and use chocolate pudding instead.

Toppings– get creative with your spooky toppings- think gummy worms, candy eyeballs, and other fun Halloween candy.

Cake– use any chocolate cake you prefer- devil’s food, or chocolate fudge cake will both work perfectly.

Candy– up the candy factor by adding a layer of your favorite candy bars into the trifle.

Make these into individual trifles by using smaller trifle bowls, mason jars, or plastic cups.
