Halloween Play Dough Tray
I love giving my little learner crew all of the elements they need to work on their fine motor skills and put their imaginations to work at the same time. This Halloween play dough tray is just the thing for a fun Halloween activity that also lends to fine motor development and exploring different textures and making learning fun. My kiddos are getting up there in age, but even they can’t resist these fun trays.
You only need a few fun materials to put this together. Here’s what we used to make our Halloween playdough kit-
Halloween Playdough Kit Supplies
Play dough – We used store bought Halloween colors, but you can also use homemade play dough. We have a super fun pumpkin playdough recipe you can use.
Pipe cleaners – These are so fun and versatile for creating.
Googly eyes – A must for creating silly monsters and creatures with different facial expressions.
Halloween Cookie cutters – We used fun halloween shapes to bring the Halloween themes to life for this activity. Our set included a pumpkin cookie cutter, a ghost shape, and candy corn shape cutter.
Plastic spiders or spider rings– Fun for wearing, and a fun addition to our DIY Halloween playdough kit.
Vampire teeth – A fun little addition to our Halloween themed items.
You can find most of these at the dollar store this time of year, or on Amazon. We try to keep these supplies tucked away so they can be used year after year. You can put these together in divided trays like we have used here, or whatever you have on hand. Make these even more fun by including some fun Halloween play dough mats.
Here are some great playdough tools that you’ll use again and again all year long-
- Rolling Pins
- This fun playdough tools kit
- Easy to clean place mats
- This multi pack of playdoh
- A giant set of cookie cutters
This activity is a ton of fun for kids of all ages, even my older son enjoys this activity still. Sometimes we’ll get the whole family in on it and have a competition to see who can create the best creature. This is also a great sensory experience for little hands, and such a fun idea for rainy days stuck inside.
You can take this activity to the next level by pairing it with some fun Halloween science experiments, and reading your favorite Halloween books- think It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown or How to Catch a Monster.

How long does DIY playdough last?
It really depends on the recipe, but if your recipe includes cream of tartar, that ingredient is meant to keep it fresh longer. It can keep for a month or longer when properly stored.
